The Outin Nano: Is Portable Espresso Finally Solved?

I finally got to try making espresso with the Outin Nano while travelling, so was happy to try it out the way it was meant to be used, away from electricity!

Pro basket changes everything, small stock is too small to get consistent coffee and larger one makes awesome crema, I would dump small portafilter and get the pro one, it’s all worth getting it. It is comparable to some Breville lower range machines and portable . I give it good 8/10 with pro basket or 5/10 with normal stock. Happy brewing

  2. @Ichibuns on November 13, 2024 at 12:15 pm

Have you ever made a video about portafilter diameters? It’s another rabbit hole I want to travel

  3. @open_source on November 13, 2024 at 12:17 pm

Non-pressurised basket should be in included in the test! yes temp is an issue to all non-boiler machines! Yes it doesn’t work in all coffees but for some is more than ok! Many times better than a coffee shop!

which hand grinder was James using in this video?

  5. @kd0r on November 13, 2024 at 12:19 pm

Have you ever used the Nifty Dripper? It’s a combination French press and filtered. So far I love mine

    Notice me guys

  7. @hrkr-hy6we on November 13, 2024 at 12:21 pm

The espresso maker’s green colour perfectly matches with the room walls, coincidence much 😂?

  8. @Hybris51129 on November 13, 2024 at 12:21 pm

It still seems that the Makita kettle is still the portable water heating solution that works but no one really wants to admit.
You can use it to preheat the machine and actually brew while conserving the espresso machines limited battery.

  9. @petost on November 13, 2024 at 12:22 pm

I got one with the upgraded kit, love to be out and enjoy a fresh grind when I got time. Also use the nespresso pods when I have limited time. Always used hot water from thermos and in my setting, 99% out in the woods, amazing! No other great option! Also on train rides it comes in handy!

I travel a few times a year and stay in hotels and conference centers. I could have used an Aeropress, French Press, or any other portable coffee maker but I got the Outin because it heats the water so all I need to have in my room is water. I use the Nespresso pod with it just so that don’t have a mess in my hotel room. Everything James said is true especially with charging the unit. I am happy with it and I prefer it to hotel coffee any day.

finally, some honesty. "it tastes like a really, really bad espresso." this has been my experience as well. i dont even know if what i sploshed out of this garbage-water-making-machine even qualifies as espresso. it may fall under the category of coffee adjacent brown water concoction. but only for the fact that i did put actual coffee into it, does it connect in any way to coffee. it was so bad it made my dogs cry. and they didnt drink it. they just looked at me with fear and trepidation, as i choked it down. their poor little faces, i cant erase that image from my mind, they were horrified. it was as if they were saying, "daddy, no. please don’t, just don’t…." i told them it would be fine, all the youtube coffee people …with affiliate links …said it would be fine. but. it wasnt fine. i imagine i could get better tasting coffee by putting 3 weeks old knockbox leavings in a french press, leaving that immersed overnight in a diaper, then reheating it in a microwave.

"to fully flex the potential of anywhere espresso," you need to constrain the meaning of anywhere.

i have to say it is refreshing when there is a dose of sanity amongst the shills. while not a condemnation, "and yet still disappointingly far away." does seem to satisfy a skeptics need for truth. i guess the problem is when one finally learns how to dial in espresso properly, at least to their liking, which, admittedly, in my case, took a fair amount of time with suboptimal kit. it is hard to step into younger me shoes when it didnt seem to matter as much.

I have a Conqueco with the same idea and for me was a guilty pleasure with my ADV bike. Just ride though the woods, find a chill place and drink a hot cup of fresh coffee while listening the forest. Loved it.

  13. @purnoruz on November 13, 2024 at 12:27 pm

Brits can definitely make espresso in the plane. I saw worse.

  14. @SWEETUMS101 on November 13, 2024 at 12:28 pm

James’ voice sounds like David Attenborough if he were narrating a coffee documentary

  15. @d.l.sstudio8922 on November 13, 2024 at 12:34 pm

I work in construction. This has been amazing for me. I make myself iced lattes with it at 4am at the job site. Really love this thing. I even started carrying more grounds with me to have another drink at my lunch later in the day. I personally think it’s the best you can get for how portable it is. Working in DTLA will cost me 12 dollars to get a coffee anywhere here. This thing paid itself off in less than a month for me.

Hello james, i’m really curious about the manual espresso or maybe looks like moka pot,
It’s name are Bacchi Espresso and it’s really Rare on the Market rn hope u get that monster to try next

    Hi James, great video again!

Totally unrelated but could you make a video about Muji Coffee products since you’ve tested IKEA’s products before. I’d be interested to have your opinion on them 🙂

  19. @davocc2405 on November 13, 2024 at 12:37 pm

Given quite how well Sony achieved laptop batteries that hit boiling point in seconds years ago (sadly usually in use on top of your lap) this is even more disappointing.

  20. @josephb7863 on November 13, 2024 at 12:40 pm

James we need a review on any La Marzocco machine and also the meraki kickstarter machine, surprised you’ve not been sent one

  21. @martyhopkirk6826 on November 13, 2024 at 12:40 pm

Is anybody else impatiently sitting around just waiting for James to review the Fellow Aiden?

  22. @franciscoslobos on November 13, 2024 at 12:43 pm

I bought it this summer for travelling and I must say it was a pleasant surprise. I’ve now upgraded to the basket plus and you can definately get better body. Overall I found the machine quite consistent. Its easy to find the right grind (the basket is so tall that if you grind too fine nothing comes out. After finding the right grind size I can always get a good tasting espresso. The bad thing is now I have to carry this brick and a grinder everywhere I go.

  23. @demonstructie on November 13, 2024 at 12:43 pm

0:33 to be fair, people being calm in places like public transport is the mark of superior cultures around the world

  24. @vikingvrox on November 13, 2024 at 12:45 pm

I bought one of these to escape exactly that, poor coffee quality at business meetings, hotels, airbnb’s and gas stations and it is totally worth it. I was not expecting perfection which is why i mostly use it with nespresso pods but it takes me through the day. I highly recommend it and hope it will get better in the future.

  25. @efi777 on November 13, 2024 at 12:45 pm

James, one more great video of yours as always, there is one missing noteworthy portable espresso machine that promises features like no others (including non pressurised 51mm filter and water heating): the Cera+ PRO – the company is nearly absent from the internet but they’ve got a reddot award in 2024. I’ve bought this one, haven’t yet received it and it promises well. Would you review it?

  26. @AnassHajThami on November 13, 2024 at 12:46 pm

I received this little beauty as a birthday gift from my brother, and i have been using it since.
At work i can brew my own coffee instead of that instant coffee machines crap, you can uses nespresso capsules and of course your own coffee.
I took it with to vacations and enjoyed my coffee in nature and airport.

  27. @lineahund on November 13, 2024 at 12:49 pm

Has anybody compared that with a picopresso?

  28. @BananaBananaBanana-y3k on November 13, 2024 at 12:52 pm

James Hoffman – please investigate why caffeine can have seemingly inverted expected effects for neurodivergent people. I love coffee, but I think I genuinely terrify people when I neck an afternoon cortado and have a little sleepy nap nap…

  29. @dr.zahalka8616 on November 13, 2024 at 12:52 pm

James would you review the Torre Teresina RS or a machine of their line ? I am planning to buy one, and would love to hear your opinion about it.

  30. @belakerkay1414 on November 13, 2024 at 12:53 pm

My wife and I have one too. We have the travel case that holds everything needed. To be honest we use the Nespresso capsules… but the reason is it’s a convent method of having good espresso, while doing 75mph (120kmh) on the highway, without needing to stop at a rest area. The capsule makes for easy cleanup and preparing for the next shot. And because of our FB posts about it, friends of ours also got one and use it all the time.. especially when camping.

Hey James! Can you do a review/critique of the Lavazza machines? Thanks!!

  32. @superbun277 on November 13, 2024 at 12:55 pm

Temperature and battery life problems are going to be the bane of portable electric coffee makers until some kind of next-generation battery technology comes onto the market; there’s no way around the fact that heating water from room temperature to near boiling uses a lot of energy.

  33. @PigHumanoid on November 13, 2024 at 12:56 pm

I took my Outin Nano to Joshua Tree National Park and pulled a shot in front of Skull Rock.

  34. @mreh145 on November 13, 2024 at 12:57 pm

Why would you not just buy an concentrate and make to preference

  35. @kiran_a on November 13, 2024 at 12:58 pm

Today I learned Tim Wendelboe is a person! His coffee shop was amazing

  36. @mickyd3 on November 13, 2024 at 1:00 pm

Thanks, guess it’s better than nothing. On another note, the noise sounds like a woman’s toy.

  37. @brittanyagm on November 13, 2024 at 1:01 pm

No one will probably read this, but I’m just now realizing… James, you’re from the UK, a country so driven by tea. It’s almost as if it’s part of the national identity. Or at least, that’s how it seems to an outsider. And I know that just as Americans(as I am one) consume tea, so too do the citizens of the UK consume coffee. But it makes me wonder, in a country so steeped in tea culture, how did you develop such a passion and expertise for coffee? Do you have a video about this? Thanks.

  38. @cristi724 on November 13, 2024 at 1:02 pm

They could save weight and maybe even make it more powerful by dropping the internal battery and just make it USB powered from a powerbank. If you’re the kind of person that travels with an espresso machine, you most likely also carry a good powerbank.

  39. @77soko77 on November 13, 2024 at 1:03 pm

This brewer… a dreo milk frother… at home lattes made too easy 😝

  40. @jimbo7223 on November 13, 2024 at 1:04 pm

Why don’t you collaborate or assist a manufacturer with making the perfect portable machine? Then you will know it has the best possible chance of making a good shot?

  41. @blueworm123 on November 13, 2024 at 1:04 pm

    Is your neck ok?

  42. @DuTuben32 on November 13, 2024 at 1:05 pm

    It’s no bripe.

  43. @Mr.Nice3000 on November 13, 2024 at 1:06 pm

Would love to get one. I am still searching what could be the best solution on the way for me. I was thinking about a Cafflano Kompresso but a Outin Nano maybe is a bit more comfortable. No ned of hot water in a Thermos. For 1-3 Espresso that would be fine for me. I have some night drives per week and at the moment I drink energy drinks on the way but I want to avoid them and search a portable Espresso maschine.

  44. @asisqueezylovediary6474 on November 13, 2024 at 1:06 pm

Can you add some comments about the basket plus that can be attached to this machine for bigger esspresso. I wish you had it in this video . I really hoped you will review it because I got this machine .I am also waiting for the cafelat robot to come more affortable in the market because 400 euro is a little bit much .

  46. @Torahboy1 on November 13, 2024 at 1:07 pm

I always assumed James flew 1st class

Or just levitated from all the caffeine in his system

    Disappointed 😢

Battery powered burr grinder, 12 volt water heater and an Aeropress. Good to go!

Hi James! Really looking forward to a potential Fellow Aiden review from your side. Hope that’s coming up.

  50. @mistersplice on November 13, 2024 at 1:12 pm

Oh, wow. Finally a product I can comment on:

I’ve had one of these for the better part of a year and use it pretty much daily. The larger basket is a really good option, as is preheating. I work in a restaurant and I’ve made dozens of coffees at work. (Even nespresso pods and heating up the milk with a 1/2 pan and a 1/4 pan are better than the terrible drip options in the restaurants I’ve worked.) I got this as a gift because I had added it to my Amazon wishlist with the intent to do more research before spending so much money on a coffee device, but the choice was taken from me. Luckily, it’s worked out to be the best option that I have to make coffee.

One of the cool things that nobody else seems to have mentioned is that if you’re using hot water, the battery in this thing lasts for months. I last charged mine in May and I make 1-3 double-shots per day.
